Keep your voice. Keep it human.

I’m Lara, an editor and research communicator helping authors, organisations, and teams make information clear, accurate, and representative.

Thoughtful editing for work with something to say.

The Copyedit Shop supports academic manuscripts, NGO and company reports, research writing, presentations, applications, and other substantial pieces of work.

I work closely with authors as an editorial partner: protecting your voice, respecting your judgment, and helping the ideas land with greater clarity.

My background in qualitative research means I’m comfortable with mixed methods, research participants, style guides, and the responsibility that comes with presenting other people’s experiences.

Types of editing
01

Substantive editing

Structure, completeness, argument, tone, flow, tables, figures, and the larger shape of a piece.

02

Copyediting

Accuracy and consistency across spelling, grammar, punctuation, hyphenation, formatting, and referencing.

03

Proofreading

A final quality-control read for remaining errors, typesetting artifacts, style-sheet conformity, and cross-references.

Good fits for this work.

I’m especially useful when the material is complex, important, or written for more than one kind of reader.

  • Academic researchers and graduate students
  • NGOs, foundations, and mission-led organisations
  • Companies preparing reports, presentations, or public-facing writing
  • Non-native English speakers working on substantial documents
  • Authors preparing applications, manuscripts, or long-form work
Selected project types

Research and reports

Evaluation reports, research manuscripts, evidence summaries, grant materials, and participant-facing documents.

Professional writing

Company reports, presentations, digital marketing, cover letters, resumes, and proposals.

Complex documents

Legal briefs, style-sensitive work, templates, and documents that need both language and structure reviewed.

A process that keeps the work human.

01 · QuoteI review a 1–2 page extract and estimate from there. A page is 250 words, double-spaced.
02 · EditI work in the editing program of your choice, usually across 2–3 passes depending on scope.
03 · DeliverI provide edits, comments, and supporting feedback, and flag foreseeable scope changes early.

What I provide

More than a marked-up document.

  • Estimates and invoices
  • Editorial reference guides and checklists
  • Feedback sheets with things to clarify and common errors
  • Attention to template structure and graphic design inconsistencies
  • Clear conversations about copyright, plagiarism, and ethical representation
AI & the human voice

Clearer writing should still sound like you.

I’ve worked on AI moderation projects and have a close eye for writing that feels generic, over-smoothed, inaccurate, or disconnected from the person or organisation behind it.

Whether a draft is fully human, AI-assisted, or somewhere in between, I help preserve its intended meaning and human voice, while identifying the telltale “AI slop” that can make otherwise good work feel flat or untrustworthy.
